Ruffle Shower Curtain by A Vision to Remember~Available in Many Different Colors

One of my favorite things to make are ruffle curtains. Ruffle Shower Curtains are no exception to that! They glam up an boring ol' bathroom in a jiffy!

I had a special request to make a custom colorblocked curtain with lime green and white ruffles. I was excited to do this curtain. I am always looking for a new challenge!

How to Sew Ruffle Valances on A Vision to Remember

I am so excited to be here with you today to share with you how to sew your very own ruffle valance curtains. I have been making these for a little over a year for my Etsy Shop and thought I would share with you all how to make them.  I also use this same method for crib skirts.

A few things that I have learned after making about a million of these curtains (or I do the same exact thing for crib skirts and bed dust ruffles):

Sewing ruffles is time consuming.  No way around it.  BUT with that being said, there are ways to make it quicker.

Remember I didn't say that it is hard, because it really is simple, but it does take time.

So here are a few tools you  might want to have in your arsenal BUT you don't have to have them.

• A serger that does a rolled hem
• A ruffler foot for your sewing machine

Finished curtain size: 42" wide by 18" tall

Materials required (assuming width of fabric is 44 inches):
1/3 yard of 4 cotton fabrics for the 4 different tiers (the fabrics I used  are Gray Matters More Mosaic, Gray Matters More Medallions,  Yellow Essential Dots by Moda , and Gray Shades by Riley Blake
1/2 yard of the fabric you will use for the back of the curtain

Cutting:

Cut from each of your 4 tier fabrics 2-5" wide by the width of the fabric
Cut 4-4.5" wide pieces from your backing fabric.














Sew each of of the 2 pieces of fabric that match each along the short end of the fabrics














IF you have a serger that does a rolled hem sew along the bottom edge of the 4 tier fabrics.

If you aren't able to do a rolled hem, then hem the bottom edges however you prefer

Hem each of the short ends of the tier fabrics and the backing fabrics.

I serged the ends to prevent fraying and then I folded  the fabric over 1/4 inch and sewed

If you have a ruffler foot, ruffle all the tier pieces of fabric along the top edge (you haven't done any sewing along that edge yet) 

Now comes the assembly of the curtain.  Take your bottom tier fabric and one of the backing pieces.  Put your ruffled piece of fabric on the bottom with the backing fabric on top of it with right sides facing each other. 

Serge (or sew if you don't have a serger) the two pieces together

Flip up the backing piece, then grab your 2nd tier piece.  Layer your backing piece that is sewn to the first tier on the bottom, with right side facing up, then the 2nd tier fabric, and lastly the backing fabric with the right side facing down.  Sew the pieces together.  

Repeat with your remaining 2 tiers.  On the last row you will need to fold your backing piece in half so that you are sewing a tube for your curtain rod to go through.  In this step you will be sewing 4 pieces of fabric at the same time and not 3 like in the previous 2 steps.

 
You might need to iron your ruffles down a little after you are all done.  Just make sure that while you are ironing that you don't smash the ruffles so they aren't fluffy.

Now you have a beautiful ruffled curtain valance!  I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial!

How to Sew Simple Ruffle Curtains

Ruffle curtains are all the rage right now.  I personally HATE sewing a million ruffles.  The end result is GORGEOUS, but the time that it takes to get there is more than I have to spare.

So here is my simple solution to sewing ruffle curtains by using ruffle fabric

First you will need to decide the length you want your curtain.  

Valance in Lavender

Half Curtain in Yellow

  

Floor Length in Apricot

Shower Curtain in Hot Pink

 You will need a sewing machine, matching thread, and 2-3 inches more than the length you need for your curtain.  If you need more than the width that the fabric comes in then you will need to sew 2 pieces that are the same length together for the extra width.


Fold over your ruffle so that you have a 2 inch rod pocket (or whatever size pocket you need.  I always make sure that I have a ruffle starting at the top.  So the pocket might end up a little wider than 2 inches or little smaller, depending on the length of ruffles. 

As you sew down, make sure to check underneath your fabric so that your ruffles aren't being sewn on the underside.  You only want to sew on the knit fabric under the ruffles.

How to Make Regular Curtains Longer and Add Embellishments for Custom Curtains

If you are like me, then you want awesome designer looking curtains for cheap and easy. Its not difficult to find a decent set of plain curtain panels for under $10/panel, but the chances that the curtain is longer than 84 inches long or embellished how you want it to be is not good! This method is also great to color block curtains too!

Today, I want to share with you how I make my curtains the custom length that I need and add a little trim to them to make them appear expensive and professional. The same method works great for shower curtains too! You can see the shower curtain I did for my Master Bathroom HERE. The green curtains I am using today I found at Ross's for $7.99/panel. Then I bought some home decor weight fabric to add onto each of the 2 panels. I got 1 yard. I also purchased enough of the bead trim to trim each of the panels going horizontally, plus a couple inches for each panel so that I can fold over the trim and not see the raw edges.

Serge all edges of new fabric

 First, figure out how long you want your curtains to be. I needed to add a couple of inches. I bought 1 yard of the fabric that I added onto the curtain. I cut that fabric in half so I added 18 inches (minus the seam allowance) onto each panel. If you own a serger, serge the edges. This will help the fabric to not fray and give it a cleaner look.  Heads up: I used a home decor fabric that measured 56 wide and my curtain panel was 54 wide so it was the perfect width.  If your fabric isn't the right width then you will need to carefully piece your fabric together so that you don't disrupt the pattern (ie my fabric has an ornate damask print and if I needed to piece it together I would want to be VERY precise in piecing it so your eye wouldn't be drawn to the seam)

Figure out how long you want the curtains (with your children's help!)

Next, lay your curtain out with the right side facing up.  Measure how far up you want the seam to be where the curtain meets your new fabric.  Make sure when you are figuring out how long you want your curtain and how far down you need the new fabric to be to account for a seam allowance.  I used a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Mark on the curtain with a fabric safe pen or marker where you want the seam to be.  Flip over your new fabric.

Next pin the right side of your curtain to the right side of your new fabric. You will need to make sure that you leave an inch or so overhang on each side of your curtain with the new fabric so that you can fold it over and sew it onto the curtain panel.

Lay out curtain and additional fabric

 Next fold over your bottom of your new fabric and sew it over just a 1/4 of an inch to hide the serged edge.  If you don't have a serger fold the fabric over once and sew it and then fold it over again and sew it.  That way you won't see the raw edge at all.

Next fold over your extra inch on each of the sides and sew it down onto the curtain.  If you have enough you can fold some of the extra under and then sew and then you wouldn't see the seam from your serger.  If you don't have a serger then fold it under twice so that you don't see the raw edge.  

Fold over left over on side and sew down

Last to add the embellishment trim to your curtain you can pin it into place right on top of your seam, or just eyeball it and sew it into place.  A note about trims: some regular sewing machines can't handle the thick braided trims so be careful when sewing them onto your curtains.  Before I got my industrial machine I tried to stick to the skinnier trims or glued them into place using heavy duty upholstery fabric glue.

Don't you just love how they turned out?  I love that I was able to get custom designer style curtains for around $12/panel.  Perfect for my budget and my expensive tastes!
